Hydrogeochemistry

Four lecture hours a week. Major topics include theoretical aspects of hydrochemical specialisation; theoretical aspects of aquatic chemistry with applications to natural water systems; equilibrium and kinetic reactions as applied to the carbonate system; mineral dissolution/precipitation; ion exchange; sorption; oxidation and reduction reactions; mineral-water interaction, and isotope geochemistry applied to hydrogeology. Practical aspects of sampling methodologies and field analysis; data checking and data presentation. Major ion, stable isotope, and radiogenic isotope geochemistry combined with physical measurements of groundwater are vital for constraining processes in the hydrosphere. Application of these techniques is used to study groundwater ages, recharge, groundwater evolution and flow, and mixing within and between groundwater and surface water systems.
